It's a strange time of year. After all the rush and panic of sowing seeds and planting out ther eisn't that much to do except harvest and keep tidy. There will always be jobs to do but not the pressing urgency from before. There is also a sence of impatience waiting for everything to finish so the beds can be cleared and palns made for next year, it's difficult to visualise and plot what needs to go where this year and for next year. I'm not sure where to put these asparagus plants. As you can see they are just starting to produce one globe each, but next year the plants will be much bigger and i have another eight plants grown from seed this year.

These are the first of the onions to be pulled up. They are spanish white and very nice in salads, much milder than normal ones

The leeks and southport red onions are doing well. First time growing them from seed and quite pleased with the results. The proof obviously is in the eating.

Next are the runner beans. I prefare the texture of these over green beans when cooked. The plants and flowers are lovely sight with the bonus of some nice beans to eat

These are some geranium, sweet williams and alpine strawberries in front of the shed to brighten up the place.

And lastly the herb bed. Not to sure what to do next year as they take up a full bed but i havent used any of them this year. There are some mints. oregano, tarragon, sage, thyme, garlic chives and lemon balm with some pot marigolds thrown in. Most of them used to be in pots but tey either outgrew them or kept drying out in warmer weather. They do look really well withn the flowers on so i may pot up the useful one for home and put the rest of them in the borders

Flaming June

June continues to be an excellent growing month with warm sunshine and showers. Not had to water the palnts too much this week with heavy showers on Tuesday evening and Sunday afternoon. Continuing to dig up salad potatoes. Because some of the varieties are maincrop i can leave them in longer and eat them full size. I think i planted too many this year taking up too many beds. The ones grown in containers did really well with better quality spuds with no scab or pest damage. Slowly moving some of the Sprouting Broccolis into where the potatoes were though some of them are sprouting now. Not sure if it's the warm weather or because i sowed them too early. Anyway I will eat then now before they go to flower. The Dwarf Kale Has been especially good to eat, just picking off a few leaves per plant then i will leave them to overwinter.

On Monday I made Aloo Saag with potatoes and spinach from Karol Kliens recipe book. I think the secrect to growing is also knowing how to cook things and what they can be used for as there is a tendancy for gluts of food and the inevitable over facing of the same veg!

On Tuesday I took cutting from shrubs, Hebe, Buddleja, Honeysuckle, Fuchia and Willow.

The rest of the week is picking and eating salad, radish, beetroot, baby carrots, tidy up and weeding. Potted up some chillies and peppers and pricked out the artichokes. As the summer holidays approach quickly i need to make sure all plants in pots are planted out and settled in before going away. Not a good time of year to go with so much going on in the allotment but I need, we all need a good rest. Ronnie on the next allotment has agreed to look after things and pick the veg and fruit thats ready. Millies also will keep an eye on things as well. Always exciting coming back from hols to see whats grow etc.

On Saturday planted out the last of the peas 'kelvendon' and 'meteor' and beans 'valour'. Then got soaked with the heaviest downpour i have seen for ages. Did the plants and duck good though.

Sunday was a lovely day, warm and humid, too hot to work so some friend came to visit us which was a real treat. Good to have friends that appreciate what we do. Hopefully we can all do it together soon!

Had a little barbeque just for the kids and us. Two fresh Trout, new potatoes and salad with marshmellows to finish. Perfect end to perfect day.

to busy to take any photos i think this week. will sort some out for next blog

Another Bank Holiday

The forecast was good and it didn't disappoint. Saturdays weather was sunshine and showers but by mid afternoon the clouds had moved away for a glorious evening. Usual mix of jobs, sowing, planting and weeding. I bought some more asparagus, connovers collosal to compliment my other varieties. So now i have two beds devoted to asparagus, 32 crowns all together which does seem quite a lot but considering how expensive and delicious it is, well worth it. I also ordered some artichoke, green globe. These came for weekend and have been potted up until i can deside where to put them. They will need somewhere sheltered because they grow quite tall.

All the beds in the veg plot were weeded and tidied up.

On Sunday it was very hot so we went for a bike ride first before relaxing in the garden allotment. Just tidied a few beds and moved things around a little. Time to chill out with family. Chippy tea with croque monsoiur and pineau. Fabulous.

Bank Holiday Monday was another hot day. An early start before it got too hot painting the fencing and sheds. Weather turned a little cool towards the end but another relaxing day with much done.
